Dr. Salz is the Principal Investigator for the VISX Hyperopic (farsighted)
and Hyperopic-Astigmatism FDA clinical trials at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center. The VISX laser was the first laser approved for the correction
of nearsighted astigmatism and higher amounts of myopia. This system
has been used at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since October of 1990.
The results for the correction of farsightedness have been very
encouraging and the FDA just approved the correction for farsightedness
in early November of 1998.
STAAR SURGICAL IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENS (ICL) – for
the correction of hyperopia
The implantable contact lens is placed inside the eye on top of
the patient’s natural lens and it is designed for the correction
of higher amounts of farsightedness and nearsightedness. Dr. Salz
is one of 6 US surgeons selected by STAAR Surgical to participate
in this FDA sponsored study for the correction of farsightedness.
Patients who have high myopia who are potential candidates for this
surgery can be referred to a center is Las Vegas for the actual
surgery and followed in Los Angeles by Dr. Salz.
CLEAR LENS EXTRACTION FOR THE CORRECTION OF FARSIGHTEDNESS
Dr. Salz has recently published 2 book chapters on the correction
of high amounts of farsightedness by removing the patient’s
natural lens and replacing it with a stronger lens calculated to
correct their vision. This technique is identical to the technique
to remove cataracts that is performed in the US approximately 1
million times per year and has proved to be one of the safest surgical
procedures ever developed. In clear lens extraction, a small 3.0
mm. incision is made into the eye, the natural lens of the eye is
removed by breaking it up ultrasonically and aspirating it. Then,
a flexible implant of the proper power is placed inside the eye
through this same small incision. Patients usually experience a
dramatic improvement in their vision the next day.
Alcon Anterior Chamber Phakic Lens Study for High Myopia
Many highly nearsighted patients who would benefit most from LASIK
surgery cannot have it because they are too nearsighted. The new
Alcon FDA study is designed to place a lens implant in front of
the pupil to correct the vision of patients up to -16 diopters of
myopia. It will be an alternative to the two currently approved
phakic implants – the Versaiye which clips to the iris and
the STAAR which is implanted behind the iris. We are currently enrolling
patients in this study (summer of 2006).
